Insights From IABC DC Metro’s “Navigating a Polluted Information Ecosystem: Tips for Communicators”
By Crystal Borde
In today’s fast-evolving information landscape, communicators are crucial in cutting through misinformation and disinformation. In a webinar hosted by the IABC DC Metro on February 11, my former Vanguard Communications colleague and now founder of Truth in Common Deanna Troust shared helpful insights on how professional communicators — and general news consumers alike — can navigate these challenges effectively.
Here are five key takeaways:
1️⃣ Understand the Information Landscape: Misinformation (unintentional inaccuracies) and disinformation (deliberate falsehoods) are reshaping public discourse. Knowing the distinction helps communicators develop effective response strategies.
2️⃣ Media Literacy is Critical: Organizations conducting professional fact-checking can help us combat information manipulation. Encouraging lateral reading—verifying sources before sharing—can help disrupt harmful narratives.
3️⃣ Trust in News is Declining: News avoidance and media cynicism are on the rise. Communicators should promote fact-based journalism, support local news outlets, and challenge discrediting tactics that undermine credible sources.
4️⃣ Social Media Algorithms Thrive on Emotion: Emotional reactions drive engagement, often at the expense of truth. Recognizing when content sparks a strong emotional response can help communicators pause, verify, and respond thoughtfully. Also, be open to conversing and engaging across viewpoint differences in social media channels.
5️⃣ Strategic Communication is More Important Than Ever: Organizations should conduct risk assessments, plan for misinformation scenarios, and be proactive in protecting their reputation. Correcting the record and engaging in transparent, values-driven storytelling can counter harmful narratives.
Thanks to IABC DC Metro and Deanna for hosting such an important conversation at this critical time. We each have a powerful role in shaping an informed and engaged public. Let’s work together to elevate truth and build resilience in the face of disinformation.
